The first people who died in the zombie apocalypse were the survivalists. That may sound unusual, but it in fact made perfect sense. Nobody acted quite so foolishly as those who thought they knew exactly what they were doing, and worst of all were the survivalists with rigid, unchangeable plans who, certain the they were already guaranteed survival, were unable to adapt when there plans weren't nearly as effective as they'd expected. The most common cause of death amongst survivalists, however, was related to guns failing to fire, often due to poor maintenance prior to the end of the world.
